Bruenig Finds Victory Lane at 151

COLUMBUS, WI (Friday, June 5, 2009) Randy Bruenig of Columbus motored
to the front of the field to grab his first feature win of 2009 in the
35 lap Late Model main event at Columbus 151 Speedway. Bruenig
battled his way from the inside of row four at the start to see the
checkers first. Tony Hahn and Jerry Eckhardt paced the field to the
green with Eckhardt taking control on the opening lap. After a quick
caution for debris, Eckhardt maintained the lead with Dean Schultz
making his way to second. Schultz began to challenge Eckhardt on the
high side, allowing Bruenig to slip under and join the battle for the
lead. By lap 11, Ron Bishofberger added his mount to the lead group
as the four competitors battled under a blanket for the top spot.
Eckhardt reclaimed sole possession of the lead on lap 20 with Bruenig
in tow for second. A lap later, Eckhardt slipped up to the outside
and opening the door Bruenig was looking for. Bruenig shot past into
the lead with Bishofberger in his tracks for second. The duo pulled
away from the pack as Bishofberger looked for a way around the new
leader. A late caution on lap 32 slowed the field and erased the
large advantage the pair had. But Bruenig managed to hold off
Bishofberger as the two finished first and second. Rounding out the
top five were Eckhardt, Schultz and Al Weishoff.
Waunakee's Brandon Riedner captured the win in the 30 lap Sportsman
feature event. Dale Weatherwax took the early lead from fellow front
row starter Dan Gosda. Gary Winters followed into second with Mike
Winters in tow for third. A caution on lap three slowed the field and
allowed Riedner to slide up to third on the restart. Riedner launched
his bid for second on lap seven, going to the outside of Gary Winters.
Winters held his ground until lap 14 when Riedner scooted past for
second. Riedner began to apply heavy pressure to Weatherwax for the
top spot. On lap 19, Riedner got a good run to the inside of
Weatherwax as they entered turn three. Riedner took away the lead and
drove away from the field. Riedner cruised across the line for the
win followed by Gary Winters, Mike Winters, Jake Wasserburger and Kurt
Clapper.
Kyle Riedner lead every lap of the 20 lap Hobby Stock main event to
grab another win in the division this season and take the points lead
back as well. Starting from the outside of row one, Riedner took sole
possession of the lead on lap two while the battle for second was on
behind him. Greg Bowers and Dustin Ward fought side by side for the
runner up spot, trading paint and positions several times. As the
leaders encountered lapped traffic, Bowers made slight contact with a
lapped competitor, sending him around in turn four and bringing out
the caution. As the green returned, Ward took second for himself and
made an attempt at Riedner for the lead. With four laps remaining,
Ward got to the inside of Riedner as the two raced side by side. As
they crossed under the checkers, Riedner held a slight advantage to
get the win. Ward was second followed by Ben Monday, Jim Tate and
Larry Moen.
Kale Peterman of Iron Ridge was awarded the win in the 20 lap Thunder
Stock feature. DL Hatton and Josh Steckel led the field to green with
Hatton taking the early lead. Brad Warthan and Peterman moved forward
into the top five while Hatton opened up a healthy advantage. Warthan
was in second by lap seven with Peterman in tow for third. By lap 16,
Warthan had caught the leader. Warthan tried everything he could
think of to get around Hatton while Peterman watched from third. On
the final lap, Hatton slowed to avoid lapped traffic, allowing Warthan
and Jarrod Sutherland to charge up alongside the leader. The three
went three wide into turn three, resulting in Warthan spinning and
Hatton crossing the stripe first. Following post race inspection,
Hatton was forced to vacate his finishing position, handing the win to
Peterman. Rounding out the top five were Harley Jankowski, Warthan,
Scott Hatton and Reiny Scherbarth.
In Bandit action, Brandon Johnson of Avalon claimed the victory in
the 18 lap feature event. Jeremy Monday took control on the first lap
from the pole while Johnson slid up to second. The leaders stayed
nose to tail until lap 12 when Johnson made contact with Monday
entering turn one and forcing the field to bunch up behind them.
Carlyn Voigt and Kameron Lee were the casualties as they wrecked in
turns one and two and brought out the caution. On the restart, Monday
experienced mechanical difficulties as Johnson shot past into the
lead. Monday recovered quickly and pulled into third behind Brandon
Condroski. Johnson maintained his advantage through one more caution
to see the checkers first for the win. Condroski, Ed Klug, Dan
Birkett and Dave Schmidt rounded out the top five.
Brooklyn's George Wachuta captured the win in the 8 lap Back up
feature race. Dustin Von Allmen motored out to a big lead at the drop
of the green with Wachuta moving to second. On lap four, Von Allmen
spun in turn four allowing Wachuta to inherit the top spot while the
rest of field bunched up around Von Allmen. Wachuta was declared the
winner in the crash shortened event with Ryan Oetzel second and Dave
Moore third.
Next Friday, June 12, is a full program in all division as well as
another visit by the Mini Mods. All residents of Fort Atkinson and
Milton receive $2 off general admission and all fans can partake of
