July 4, 2008; Columbus, WI. - Andy
Tomlinson of Poynette got to the front late in the race to take the
win in the Cherry Bomb 50 lap Late Model feature at Columbus 151
Speedway. Zeke Bishofberger dominated most of the race, taking the
early lead on the first lap with last week's winner, Jeff Falbe,
following into second. The first of three cautions flew on lap five
when quick qualifier Al Weishoff went around in turn four. When the
green returned, Tomlinson made his first appearance in the top five,
moving to fourth on lap 15.
Another caution period slowed the field on lap 18, and Tomlinson
used the restart to launch his bid for the top spot. Tomlinson took
his first look at the lead, but Bishofberger reclaimed sole
possession a lap later. Tomlinson began to fade a little, falling
into a battle for third when Falbe moved back into second. On lap
33, Tomlinson remounted his challenge, moving back to the outside of
Falbe. Tomlinson charged up alongside Bishofberger once again just
as the final caution waved on lap 44, setting up a six lap shootout
for the win.
The restart saw Don Gaserude join the fight up front, but
Gaserude was unable to make it work on the outside, slipping back
and allowing Tomlinson to try the high lane once again. Tomlinson
pulled even with Bishofberger with two laps remaining, and the duo
traveled under the white flag side by side. As the battled on the
final lap, Tomlinson appeared to hold the slight advantage and was
able to hold that lead as they crossed the stripe under the
checkers. It was Tomlinson for the close victory with Bishofberger
second. Rounding out the top five were Falbe, Gaserude and Ron
Bishofberger.
As mentioned, Al Weishoff claimed fast time with a lap of 13.456
seconds. Heat winners were Delbert Desjarles, Falbe and Gaserude.
Waunakee's Scott Riedner increased his point lead in the
Sportsman division by laying claim to the 30 lap feature event. Dale
Weatherwax grabbed the early lead on the opening lap as the inside
lane followed him to the front with Ken Scott in second. The only
caution of the event flew early, allowing Riedner to restart on the
outside and begin his challenge for the lead. Riedner pulled in
behind his son Brandon in fourth as the leaders ran nose to tail for
a few laps until Scott Riedner drove to the outside. Scott Riedner
made a strong run past Scott to second alongside Weatherwax for the
lead. Riedner cleared for the top position on lap 17 and started to
drive away from the field. Riedner cruised to the checkers for the
win followed by Weatherwax, Scott, Brandon Riedner and Mike Winters.
Jake Wasserbuger owned fast time on the night with a lap of 14.141
while heat winners included Weatherwax and Riedner.
Andy Raley of Fall River dominated the 25 lap Hobby Stock feature
to take his place in victory lane following the race. Alan Dorn took
control early with Kyle Riedner following into second. The sole
caution of the event flew on lap three, allowing Raley to move up
and challenge for the top spot on the restart. As the green flew
again, Raley charged to the high side of Dorn, clearing for the top
spot on lap six and immediately pulling away from the pack. The
remainder of the race was caution free and Raley took advantage by
opening up a large lead on his way to the big win. Rounding out the
top five were Dorn, Dustin Ward, Lincoln Keeser and Gary Pashley.
Raley also set the pace in qualifying with a lap of 15.263 while
Dorn captured the heat race.
In Bandit action, Tom Berens of Slinger claimed the 18 lap
feature event. Richie Henson took the lead early on from the front
row as the field battled through three early cautions. Brandon
Johnson was picking his way through the field with Berens in tow as
the two drivers moved into the top three on lap seven. On lap nine,
Henson floated high allowing Johnson and Berens to shoot by into
first and second respectively. Berens began hounding Johnson, and
after a final caution period, Berens got to the outside of Johnson
looking to lead. As the duo passed under the white flag, Berens held
the slight
advantage and he held that lead for the final tour, taking the close
victory with Johnson in second. Dave Schmidt, Henson and Jess
Watters completed the top five. Michael Clapper held fast time with
a lap of 16.075 while heat winners included Henson, Melissa Moen and
Carlyn Voigt.
In wild and crazy back up action, Jug Her of Waunakee took the
win the 8 lap feature. Andy Ward and George Wachuta took off at the
start and pulled away from the rest. But the two made contact on lap
four, ending in both spinning to the infield and allowing Her to
inherit the top spot. Her cruised to the win with Ryan Oetzel and
Rick Verdon to
finish the top three.
