Bishofberger Finds
Victory Lane Again
By Andrew

May 30, 2008; Columbus, WI. - Fort
Atkinson's Ron Bishofberger seized the opportunity to take over the
top spot in the 35 lap late model feature as he motored to his third
feature win of the season. Justin Schultz and Jerry Eckhart
battled from the front row at the start with Schultz taking the
initial lead. But Eckhart wouldn't go away that easily, fighting
back on the outside of Schultz.
The first of two cautions flew on lap six, handing the lead to
Eckhart on the restart. Bishofberger got past Schultz just as the
second yellow waved on lap eight. After the restart, the field lined
up single file with Eckhart out front and
Bishofberger right behind. Bishofberger shadowed the leader, waiting
for his opportunity to pass. As the leaders approached lapped
traffic with four laps remaining, that opportunity presented itself.
Eckhart went to the high side to go around a lapped vehicle, opening
up the bottom lane for Bishofberger to slip in. He charged by
Eckhart into the lead and blew by the checkers in first. Following
Bishofberger across the line were Eckhart, Schultz, Nick Wendt and
Bobbi
Bishofberger. Aaron Wilke was fastest in qualifying with a lap of
13.400. Tylor Schultz, Ron Bishofberger and Al Weishoff all claimed
wins in heat race action.
A caution filled 30 lap sportsman feature ended with Bret Schmidt
of Watertown in victory lane for the win. Dan Gosda took the early
lead on the opening lap with Ed Jackson following in second. Gosda
maintained his lead throughout most of the event as the yellow waved
several times. The first real challenge for the lead came when Tim
Syvrud made his way to the front of the pack and began working on
Gosda. Syvrud got to the outside, pulling even on different
occasions, but not being able to make a pass. With four laps to go,
Syvrud got a good run, but got loose in turns three and four,
spinning
and bringing out the final caution. Schmidt prepared to launch his
bid for the top position, and as the green returned, he made quick
work around the high side of Gosda and into the lead. Schmidt
cruised the win followed by Gosda, Jackson, Scott Riedner and Phil
Denikas. Schmidt also set the pace in time trials with a lap of
13.964 while heat winners included Tiffany Desjarles and Scott
Riedner.
Jefferson's Kenny Au lead flag to flag to take the win in the 20
lap hobby stock feature event. Starting from the pole, Au took the
lead from Kyle Riedner on the opening lap and never looked back as
the field lined up nose to tail. The field was slowed for caution
twice during the race, but Au was never seriously challenged for the
lead. Rounding out the top five were Dustin Ward, Andy Raley, Gary
Pashley and Steve Sauer. Fast time was held by Pashley with time of
15.278
and Lincoln Keeser was the heat race winner.
Michael Clapper of Dane found himself in the right place at the
right time as he took the lead late and drove to the win in the 18
lap bandit feature event. Mike Waddell grabbed the early lead from
the pole as Brandon Condroski pulled into second. Condroski got to
the inside of Waddell and took the spot away on lap seven. The only
caution flew on lap nine, bunching up the field and moving Clapper,
Kyle Watters and Josh Bisbee amongst the leaders. After the restart,
Bisbee moved into second and went to work on the leader Condroski.
On lap 13, Bisbee got past the leader on the inside with Watters and
Clapper in tow for second and third. Watters began hounding the rear
bumper of Bisbee as the two made contact several times. As the white
flag waved, the two competitors made heavy contact entering turn one
sending them up the track and allowing Clapper to shoot by into the
lead. Clapper flew to the stripe to take the win followed by Carlyn
Voigt, Condroski, David Schmidt and Dan Ellis. Watters held quick
time with a lap of 16.166 while heat winners were Mitch Drunasky,
Schmidt and Alex Lee.
In wild and crazy back up feature action, Brooklyn's George
Wachuta claimed victory in the 8 lap event. Ryan Oetzel lead on the
first lap with Wachuta right behind. Wachuta moved to the inside of
Oetzel on the second tour as the two raced side by side for the next
two laps. Wachuta finally took over the lead on lap four and cruised
to the win followed by Oetzel and Wayne Hook.
Joining the night's events was visit from the Vintage Modifieds
of the Milwaukee Stock Car Association. Cory Pieper dominated the 15
lap feature, taking the lead on the opening lap and driving away
from the pack. Bill Schmitz and Bill Behm battled for second, with
Schmitz finally taking the spot on lap 11. But Pieper's lead was too
big to overcome and Schmitz had to settle for second with Behm in
third.
