Another Win
By Andrew

May 23, 2008; Columbus, WI. - Watertown's
Andy Wendt dominated the 35 lap late model feature on his
way to his second win of the season. Delbert Desjarles and Mike
Taylor made up the front row at the drop of the green with Taylor
taking control down the backstretch and the outside line moving
forward behind him. Jerry Eckhart grabbed second with Wendt charging
into third. Wendt wasted little time as he went right to work on the
outside of Eckhart for second.
On lap four, Wendt cleared Eckhart and pulled even with Taylor
for the lead as Al Weishoff joined the duo. Wendt took sole
possession of the top spot on lap seven and never looked back.
Weishoff followed into second as the two leaders powered away from
the field. The caution free event saw Wendt and Weishoff drive out
to better than a half track advantage on the rest of their
competitors. They cruised to the one-two finish with Don Gaserude,
Dean Schultz and Ron Bishofberger rounding out the top five. Schultz
set the pace in qualifying with a lap of 13.350 while heat winners
included Weishoff and Wendt.
Tony Showers of DeForest lead wire to wire to take the checkers
in the 30 lap sportsman feature event. Starting outside Mike
Winters, Showers took control of the top spot as they sped down the
backstretch on the opening lap. Winters fell to second as the battle
for third raged behind him. The first of two cautions flew on lap
eight for heavy contact between Dan Schmidt and Jake Wasserburger in
turn four.
After the clean up, Tim Syvrud charged into the second spot and
began to work on Showers for the lead. The two began pulling away
when Syvrud started looking to the high side to get by. Syvrud made
many attempts at a pass, but to no avail. The second caution proved
to make no difference at the top of the leader board as Showers
maintained his advantage. Syvrud pressured Showers all the way to
the finish with Showers taking the checkers out front followed by
Syvrud, Dale Weatherwax, Winters and Dan Gosda. With a lap of
14.046, Kevin Anderson owned fast time. Heat winners were Winters
and Showers.
Johnson Creek's Lincoln Keeser prevailed in a tight finish of the
20 lap hobby stock feature to take the win. Keeser took the initial
lead on lap one with Dustin Ward following into second. Ward moved
to the outside to challenge Keeser for the lead as he pulled even on
lap three. Gary Pashley pulled to the rear bumper of Keeser to make
it a three way battle for the lead. A lap later, Larry Moen joined
the fight as he drove to the high side of Pashley and it became a
four way battle. Andy Raley took advantage of the side by side
racing to catch the foursome and four became five. The group of
competitors battled each other hard over the final 15 laps, trading
paint and positions until the end. As they crossed under the
checkers, it was Keeser by a fender with Ward, Pashley, Raley and
Moen rounding out the top five. Pashley set quick time with a lap of
15.086 with Moen grabbing the heat race win.
Kyle Watters of Stoughton made it three out of four as he claimed
the 18 lap feature win in the bandit division. Watters came from
deep in the pack at the start, moving into the top five on lap eight
while. Meanwhile, Keaton Hubred inherited the lead when Brandon
Johnson experienced wheel problems, surrendering to him the top
spot. On lap nine, Michael Clapper moved into second with Watters in
tow for third. Clapper pulled to the rear bumper of Hubred and
looked to the
outside for first. Watters joined the fight a lap later, and on lap
14, made it a three wide battle entering turn one. The three touched
with Watters controlling the lead exiting turn two. Hubred and
Clapper continued to battle as Watters drove away to the win.
Clapper took second with Hubred third. Brandon Condroski was fourth
with Kyle Stark fifth. Clapper held down quick time with a 16.157
second lap while heat winners included Jimmy Junget, Brandon Johnson
and David
Schmidt.
In wild and crazy back up action, Andy Ward of Madison won the 8
lap feature event. Ward took the lead away from Wayne Hook on the
second lap with George Wachuta following into second. Wachuta
shadowed Ward the remainder of the race, but Ward never surrendered
the lead as he crossed the line in first followed by Wachuta and Jug
Hur.
Also on the schedule for the night was the Midwest Stock Car
Classics. Driving a 1957 Ford, John Vassh, Jr took the lead on the
second circuit and held off the advances of Lon Meagher for the
entire contest. Meagher tried every lane possible to get by for the
lead, but Vassh managed to hold him off, taking the win with Meagher
in second and Randy Vassh in third.
Next Friday, May 30, is a full program in all divisions including
a visit from the Milwaukee Vintage Stock Car series. Time trials
begin at 6:30 with racing at 8 pm.
