Schultz Captures Another Feature Win
By Andrew Schaller

August 29, 2008; Columbus, WI. - Juneau's Dean Schultz laid claim to his second feature win of the season in the 35 lap main event while the battle for the championship is as tight as ever heading into the final week of the season. With
the Season Championships on the horizon, Ron Bishofberger holds a slight 11 point advantage over his closest competitor Don Gaserude. But it was Schultz grabbing headline after his feature winning performance at Columbus 151 Speedway.

Andy Ward made a late race pass to capture the Backup feature event.

Zeke Bishofberger took the early lead as the field crossed the stripe to complete lap one. The first of two cautions slowed the pack on lap two, setting up Al Weishoff to Zeke Bishofberger's outside for the restart. Weishoff pulled even on lap three, and took control of the point two laps later with Schultz in tow for second. The duo began to separate themselves from the field as Schultz pressured the new leader. Meanwhile, Gaserude and Ron Bishofberger fought their way into the top five with Gaserude holding off Bishofberger for third. On lap 19, Weishoff and Schultz made contact through turns one and two, allowing Schultz to shoot into the lead and forcing Weishoff to fall to fourth. Schultz battled through the final caution on lap 24 to see the checkers first followed by Gaserude, Ron Bishofberger, Weishoff and Jeff Falbe. Andy Wendt was fastest in qualifying with a lap of 13.361 while heat winners included Delbert Desjarles and Mike Taylor.

Brandon Riedner of Waunakee led the majority of the 30 lap Sportsman feature event to claim the win. Brad Luck owned the top spot on lap two with Riedner shadowing him in second. The field raced to the first caution on lap ten. On the restart, Riedner charged alongside Luck looking to lead. A lap later, Riedner was out front, with his father Scott in tow for second. The elder Riedner followed in his son's footprints until the final caution on lap 24 slowed the field setting up a six lap shootout to the finish. But Brandon had enough to hold his father off and take the checkers for the win. Scott
Riedner, Dale Weatherwax, Todd Showers and Dennis Schwark rounded out the top five. Showers also owned quick time with a lap of 14.014 and heat winners were Ed Jackson and Dan Gosda.

Ben Monday of Marshall led all but one lap on his way to winning the 25 lap Hobby Stock main event. Robert Holstein held the initial lead until lap two when Monday shot by into first with Gary Pashley right behind for second. Two early cautions slowed the field, but Monday managed to defend his position through each to maintain the lead. Jim Tate battled his way up to the second spot with only five laps to go, but Monday had just enough to hold him off to take the win followed by Tate, Kyle Riedner, Lincoln Keeser and Dustin Ward. Tate set the pace in time trials with a 15.064 second tour of the quarter mile. Monday and Keeser won heat races in earlier action.

Beaver Dam's Carlyn Voigt got her first career feature win by claiming the 18 lap Bandit event. Dave Schmidt took the early advantage with Voigt following into second. Voigt went to the outside of the leader on lap five, as she pulled even for the top spot. After a brief battle, Voigt moved to the point on lap eight and never looked back. Voigt stretched her lead over the final ten laps to see the checker s first for the win. Rounding out the top five were Schmidt, Keaton Hubred, Brandon Condroski and Alex Lee. Bill Falk set quick time with a lap of 15.890. Brandon Johnson claimed the last chance race with Schmidt, Lee and Richie Henson winning the heat events.

In wild and crazy backup action, Andy Ward of Madison took over the lead with two laps to go to win the 8 lap feature. George Wachuta shot into the lead at the drop of the green and dominated the first six laps until experiencing some mechanical difficulties on lap six. Ward motored past into the lead and drove off to the checkers for the win. Ryan Oetzel was second with Jug Her in third.
