Schmidt Claims First Feature at Columbus 151

August 8, 2008; Columbus, WI. - Dennis "Barney" Schmidt of Juneau claimed top honors, in the 35 lap Late Model main event, notching the first Feature win at Columbus. Starting on the pole Schmidt took the early lead, guiding the field all the way to the checkers.

Andy Ward picked up the Feature win in the Back-Up Division.

Caution came on the 8th circuit when the field bunched up, sending Ron Bishofberger into the wall at the entrance to turn 1. Bishofberger was finished for the evening, as Schmidt led the restart. The drive to the checkers
was interrupted, by the final caution, on lap 26 for a spin between turns 3 and 4. When the green flew again, Schmidt pulled ahead showing the way to the checkers. At the stripe it was Schmidt followed by Zeke Bishofberger, Jerry Eckhardt, Don Gaserude and Aaron Wilke.

In Sportsman action Brandon Riedner of Waunakee claimed top honors in the 30 lap feature. Starting 10th in the field Riedner headed toward the point as Brad Luck claimed the early lead. Luck showed the way for 11 laps before surrendering the point to Gerry Junget, with Scott Riedner close behind for the 2nd spot. Brandon Riedner claimed the 3rd spot, by lap 14 joining the battle for the top spot. Junget held off the Riedner charge all the way to the white flag, with first Scott and then Brandon working the outside. On the final lap Brandon Riedner made his run to the outside, pulling ahead around the final turns, to claim victory by a half car length. Junget claimed the second spot followed by Scott Riedner, Luck and Craig Olver.

In Hobby Stock action Andy Raley of Fall River notched the win, in the 25 lap main event. Starting outside the front row, Raley claimed the early lead and never looked back guiding the field to the checkered flag. Caution came on lap 7, for a spin off the 2nd turn. Raley led the restart with Jerry Chapman running 2nd and Gary Pashley in the 3rd spot. Pashley claimed the 2nd spot by lap 8, closing with Raley as the two opened a strong lead, over the rest of the field. As they took the checkers it was Raley for the win followed by Ben Monday, Dustin Ward, Pashley and Kyle Riedner.

In Bandit action Brandon Johnson of Cambridge turned a 4th place start into a feature win, in the 18 lap main event. At the green flag Johnson headed toward the front as Jeff Lafave took the early lead. Lafave turn at the point ended on lap 2, as he spun, bringing out the first caution of the race. Johnson had the point for the restart, guiding the field from there to the checkers. As Johnson showed the way, Carlyn Voigt made her way, from a 12th place start, to the 2nd spot, closing with Johnson by lap 16. Johnson held off the Violets' charge, claiming the win, with Voigt second. Rounding out the top 5
were Keaton Hubred, Brandon Condroski, and Ed Klug.

In the Backup division Andy Ward, won the feature followed by George Wachuta, Jug Hur, Ryan Oetzel and Wayne Hook.

Rounding out the nights racing action was the Formula Indy Racing Association, with a, 15 lap feature. Winning the event was Bern Brown, followed by Grant Greenfield, Kyle Lynn, Tim Roach and Lyle Phillips.
