Dean Schultz Picks Up Feature Win
By Andrew Schaller

August 1, 2008; Columbus, WI. - Dean Schultz of Juneau claimed his first feature win of the season last Friday night at Columbus 151 Speedway.  Schultz dominated all 35 laps of the Late Model feature, starting the race from the outside of
row one.  Schultz grabbed the lead exiting turn two of the first lap, but was slowed a lap later for the first of two caution periods when Andy Tomlinson slammed the front stretch wall.

George Wachuta came out on top after winning the Back-Up Feature.

After the restart, Nick Wendt move into the second spot as the two leaders spaced themselves out from each other and the rest of the field.  The leaders
breezed through the majority of the event until lap 29 when caution flew once again, this time for Al Weishoff spinning out of turn four. But after having his large lead erased, Schultz was able to maintain
his advantage over the pack as he cruised to the checkers for the win.  Rounding out the top five were Wendt, Bobbi Bishofberger, Don Gaserude and Ron Bishofberger.  Tomlinson was quickest in time trials with a lap of 13.438 while heat winners included Tylor Schultz and Ron Bishofberger.

Waunakee's Scott Riedner battled some mid race adversity to come back for the win in the 30 lap Sportsman feature event.  Ed Jackson and Brad Luck lead the field to green with Jackson taking the early lead into turn three.  The yellow waved on lap six, slowing the field and allowing Riedner to move up and challenge for the lead.  As the green returned, Riedner charged alongside Jackson looking to take over the top spot.  The two competitors fought side by side over the next eight laps until they made contact exiting turn four.  Jackson spun as a result and the two drivers were sent to the rear for their involvement in the caution period.  Dale Weatherwax inherited the lead with Jake Wasserburger right behind for second.  As the racing got underway once again, Wasserburger tried his luck on the outside, pulling even with Weatherwax.  On lap 17, Wasserburger broke loose, touching Weatherwax and spinning to the infield, thus bringing out another caution.

Weatherwax restarted the race as the leader, this time with Brandon Riedner in second.  By this time, Scott Riedner had worked his way back towards the front, sitting in the third spot.  When green flag racing resumed, Scott Riedner motored to the high side of Weatherwax and claimed the lead with only 11 laps remaining.  Brandon Riedner slipped by for second, and the father/son duo raced away to the stripe to finish first and second.  Weatherwax, Dan Schmidt and Phil Denikas
completed the top five.  Don Trush claimed fast time with a lap of 14.123.  Heat race winners were Brandon Riedner and Phil Denikas.

Gary Pashley of Marshall led every lap of the 25 lap Hobby Stock feature on his way to victory lane with the win.  Brian Pillar and Kyle Riedner paced the field as the green flag flew.  Pillar floated high in turn two of the opening lap, allowing Pashley to sneak past on the inside and take control of the race.  Ben Monday followed Pashley into second and began to shadow the leader.  The duo ran nose to tail over the entire length of the race with Monday looking for a lane around the leader.  But Monday was unsuccessful as Pashley crossed the stripe with the win.  Monday was second followed by Jim Tate, Dustin Ward and Andy Raley.  Ward set the pace in qualifying with a lap of 15.144 while Kyle Riedner claimed the heat race win.

Dane's Michael Clapper added to his point lead by taking the win in the 18 lap Bandit feature race.  Michael Heimann took the initial lead from fellow front row starter Melissa Moen as the green flag dropped. But Moen battled back on the outside to motor by Heimann and into the lead.  Clapper used the same line around Heimann as he shot into second.  Clapper immediately went to work on Moen for the top spot, getting to the inside on lap four and into the lead.  Clapper began to
pull away from the rest of the field as he cruised to the easy win with Jimmy Junget, Moen, Jess Riedner and Brandon Condroski rounding out the top five.  With a lap of 16.172, Ed Klug was quickest in qualifying.  Heat race winners included Clapper and Junget.

In wild and crazy back up action, George Wachuta of Brooklyn was the winner in the eight lap feature event.  Ryan Oetzel took the early lead on the first lap, but it was short lived as Wachuta sliced by into the lead a lap later.  Oetzel fell to third when Jug Her got by into second behind Wachuta and the three ran the remainder of the race in that order.  Wachuta was the winner followed by Her and Oetzel.
