Wendt Prevails Again at Columbus 151 Speedway

July 11, 2008; Columbus, WI. - Watertown's Andy Wendt dominated on his way to another win in the 35 lap Late Model feature event at Columbus 151 Speedway. Delbert Desjarles took the initial lead on the opening lap from fellow front row starter Tim Syvrud with Wendt right behind for second. Wendt looked to the high side of Desjarles as the only caution of the race flew on lap three.

As the green returned, Wendt again looking to the outside of Desjarles, making the winning pass as they exited turn four. Ron Bishofberger followed Wendt by Desjarles and the duo immediately began to pull away from the pack. The remainder of the race ran caution free as Wendt and Bishofberger raced nose to tail separating themselves from the field. Andy Tomlinson freed himself from the pack as well and ran down the leaders as they began to encounter lapped traffic. But Wendt was not fazed as he cruised to checkers for the win with Bishofberger and Tomlinson in tow. Dean
Schultz and Don Gaserude rounded out the top five. Schultz set the pace in qualifying with a lap of 13.538 seconds while heat winners included Desjarles and Wendt.

Brandon Riedner of Waunakee charged to the front of the 30 lap Sportsman feature on his way to victory lane with the win. Dan Gosda and Tiffany Desjarles led the field to the drop of the green flag. Desjarles broke loose in turn four of the first lap, losing control and slamming hard into the front stretch wall. On the restart, Gosda took control of the race with Gerry Junget taking over second. Junget spent the next 14 laps looking to get by Gosda for the top spot, finally doing so on lap 18 after a hard fought battle. Meanwhile, Riedner was making his way through the top five and behind the two leaders. Riedner used to opening created by Junget to also get by Gosda for second. Riedner went right to work on the leader while his father, Scott was moving to the front as well. With four laps remaining, Brandon Riedner managed to sneak underneath Junget entering turn three and taking away the top spot. Scott Riedner followed into second, but Brandon had already opening up a comfortable lead on his way to the win. Scott Riedner was second followed by Junget, Jake
Wasserburger and Kevin Anderson. Anderson also held fast time with a lap of 14.207. In earlier heat race action, Dale Weatherwax and Phil Denikas were winners.

Waterloo's Dustin Ward made a late race charge to claim victory in the 25 lap Hobby Stock feature event. Gary Pashley was the early leader with Kyle Riedner close behind in second. The pack ran nose to tail until lap 15 when Ward and Lincoln Keeser split Riedner making a three wide battle for second. Keeser emerged from the fight with the position and began to hound the leader. Ward joined the tussle, going to the outside and pulling even with Pashley on lap 18. A lap later, Ward took control of the top spot. Pashley drifted high and began to slip back allowing Keeser to move to second. But Ward was too far ahead to be challenged as the motored to the win. Rounding out the top five were Keeser, Ben Monday, Andy Raley and Pashley. Ward also set quick time with a 15.816 second tour of the quarter mile while Pashley claimed the heat race win.

Brandon Johnson of Cambridge grabbed the win in the 18 lap Bandit feature race. Richie Henson took the early lead as Johnson maneuvered into second. The caution waved on lap five and as the green returned, Henson seemed to have problems as the pulled out of the groove and dropped into the pack. This handed the lead over to Johnson. Jimmy Junget and Melissa Moen began to make their bids for the lead as they battled each other for the second spot as well. The threesome fought lap after lap with Johnson maintaining his advantage all the way to the checkers. Junget took second with Moen third. Completing the top five were Tim Draheim and Travis Schneeberg. Alex Lee was fastest in time trials with a lap of 16.477 while heat winners included Henson and Jess Watters.

In wild and crazy back up action, Brooklyn's George Wachuta took the top spot in the 8 lap feature. Andy Ward led at the drop of the green, but spun in turn four collecting Ryan Oetzel and ending both their evenings. Wachuta took over the lead and cruised to the win followed by Jug Her and Rick Verdon.

Also racing with the normal divisions was the Formula Indy Racing Association. Grant Greenfield was the big winner of the 15 lap feature event. Tim Roach grabbed the initial lead with Greenfield right behind for second. Greenfield made his move a lap later, taking over the top spot and driving away to the win. Vern Brown managed to get to second but could not run down the leader as he was forced to settle for second.
