July 11, 2008; Columbus, WI. -
Watertown's Andy Wendt dominated on his way to another win in the 35
lap Late Model feature event at Columbus 151 Speedway. Delbert
Desjarles took the initial lead on the opening lap from fellow front
row starter Tim Syvrud with Wendt right behind for second. Wendt
looked to the high side of Desjarles as the only caution of the race
flew on lap three.
As the green returned, Wendt again looking to the outside of
Desjarles, making the winning pass as they exited turn four. Ron
Bishofberger followed Wendt by Desjarles and the duo immediately
began to pull away from the pack. The remainder of the race ran
caution free as Wendt and Bishofberger raced nose to tail separating
themselves from the field. Andy Tomlinson freed himself from the
pack as well and ran down the leaders as they began to encounter
lapped traffic. But Wendt was not fazed as he cruised to checkers
for the win with Bishofberger and Tomlinson in tow. Dean
Schultz and Don Gaserude rounded out the top five. Schultz set the
pace in qualifying with a lap of 13.538 seconds while heat winners
included Desjarles and Wendt.
Brandon Riedner of Waunakee charged to the front of the 30 lap
Sportsman feature on his way to victory lane with the win. Dan Gosda
and Tiffany Desjarles led the field to the drop of the green flag.
Desjarles broke loose in turn four of the first lap, losing control
and slamming hard into the front stretch wall. On the restart, Gosda
took control of the race with Gerry Junget taking over second.
Junget spent the next 14 laps looking to get by Gosda for the top
spot, finally doing so on lap 18 after a hard fought battle.
Meanwhile, Riedner was making his way through the top five and
behind the two leaders. Riedner used to opening created by Junget to
also get by Gosda for second. Riedner went right to work on the
leader while his father, Scott was moving to the front as well. With
four laps remaining, Brandon Riedner managed to sneak underneath
Junget entering turn three and taking away the top spot. Scott
Riedner followed into second, but Brandon had already opening up a
comfortable lead on his way to the win. Scott Riedner was second
followed by Junget, Jake
Wasserburger and Kevin Anderson. Anderson also held fast time with a
lap of 14.207. In earlier heat race action, Dale Weatherwax and Phil
Denikas were winners.
Waterloo's Dustin Ward made a late race charge to claim victory
in the 25 lap Hobby Stock feature event. Gary Pashley was the early
leader with Kyle Riedner close behind in second. The pack ran nose
to tail until lap 15 when Ward and Lincoln Keeser split Riedner
making a three wide battle for second. Keeser emerged from the fight
with the position and began to hound the leader. Ward joined the
tussle, going to the outside and pulling even with Pashley on lap
18. A lap later, Ward took control of the top spot. Pashley drifted
high and began to slip back allowing Keeser to move to second. But
Ward was too far ahead to be challenged as the motored to the win.
Rounding out the top five were Keeser, Ben Monday, Andy Raley and
Pashley. Ward also set quick time with a 15.816 second tour of the
quarter mile while Pashley claimed the heat race win.
Brandon Johnson of Cambridge grabbed the win in the 18 lap Bandit
feature race. Richie Henson took the early lead as Johnson
maneuvered into second. The caution waved on lap five and as the
green returned, Henson seemed to have problems as the pulled out of
the groove and dropped into the pack. This handed the lead over to
Johnson. Jimmy Junget and Melissa Moen began to make their bids for
the lead as they battled each other for the second spot as well. The
threesome fought lap after lap with Johnson maintaining his
advantage all the way to the checkers. Junget took second with Moen
third. Completing the top five were Tim Draheim and Travis
Schneeberg. Alex Lee was fastest in time trials with a lap of 16.477
while heat winners included Henson and Jess Watters.
In wild and crazy back up action, Brooklyn's George Wachuta took
the top spot in the 8 lap feature. Andy Ward led at the drop of the
green, but spun in turn four collecting Ryan Oetzel and ending both
their evenings. Wachuta took over the lead and cruised to the win
followed by Jug Her and Rick Verdon.
Also racing with the normal divisions was the Formula Indy Racing
Association. Grant Greenfield was the big winner of the 15 lap
feature event. Tim Roach grabbed the initial lead with Greenfield
right behind for second. Greenfield made his move a lap later,
taking over the top spot and driving away to the win. Vern Brown
managed to get to second but could not run down the leader as he was
forced to settle for second.
